Zelek Flower Shop celebrates 60 years

MORNING JOURNAL/ANNA NORRIS Owner of Zelek Flower Shop, Mary Zelek, is celebrating her shop�s 60th anniversary this year. Zelek has been working in the shop, now at 10th Street and Reid Avenue, since she was a little girl when her parents ran the store. Zelek Flower Shop sells flowers for a variety of occasions and holidays, including weddings, for which these purple flowers are reserved.

“At the beginning, you competed with companies in your hometown. Now, with the Internet, we compete on a nationwide level. If you Google the word “florist” in Lorain, you’ll get dozens of shops. Many of the websites are not connected with a brick and mortar florist, but they transfer you to that location. My mission is to educate as many people as I can about that. They’re (websites) collecting commissions and service fees and the consumer suffers. If you’re going to order flowers online, make sure you’re working with the shop located in that town, so you never have to pay for a service fee,” Zelek said. “If the customer is talking with someone who is not experienced and not really a florist, they’re not going to get the same product. My parents built a wonderful business on sound, solid principles, excellent quality and great service, all at a fair price. And we try to maintain that every day,” she said. “Our floral designers are real artists who will bend over backwards to accommodate the customer.”

“We have seen a decline in walk-in traffic over the years, in general. That’s the nature of our business; convenience. To pick up the phone and get something delivered within hours. I would say 75 percent of our business is over the phone. Probably another 10 to 15 percent is our online orders. Even then, those people who will look at our website will call us, because there’s only so much you can relay online, and they want to be sure their order is right,” said Zelek. “Ninety percent of our flowers come from South America and some come from Europe and California. There’s a few shops that still grow their own flowers, but it’s a limited amount. There used to be rose growers, too. But they had to close because it’s hard to operate a greenhouse with our weather here and the cost of gas to heat them,” Zelek explained.

The two hour workshop is aimed at knitting beginners, or candidates looking to revise their skills. The workshop also promises to inject a little fun into your day a sociable environment. The students will be taken through every part of the workshop slowly and at the students pace so that everyone can take away their newly learnt skills and continue knitting projects in their own time. The workshop also aims to teach students how to begin knitting, knit and pearl stitches and also increasing a stitch. And participants will be taught how to read a knitting pattern, a very useful skill for all avid knitters. The workshop is held in the knitshop.co.uk Boutique and will include a maximum of eight students so the class remains small and all questions can be answered and one-to-one help can be given to everyone. Materials will be provided for each student to complete at least one knitted corsage and students can take this away with them to adorn on their favourite accessory!
