Amy Winehouse: Is art worth dying for?
AMY Winehouse always had the voice – that vast, deep, sultry instrument was all over her first album Frank. But until Back To Black, she didn’t have the pain.
Back To Black was inspired by her break-up with Blake Fielder-Civil, the louche youth who dated and dumped her in 2005.
Music fans should, arguably, be grateful to Fielder-Civil. After all, if he hadn’t shattered Amy’s heart, tracks like Tears Dry On Their Own and Love Is A Losing Game wouldn’t even exist. But her musical inspiration was also her downfall. After Back To Black was released, she and Fielder-Civil got back together. And we all saw how terrible an idea that was.
The soulful production and sing-along tunes of Back To Black pull you in, but it’s Amy’s suffering that makes it a stone-cold classic.
It drips through her voice. It’s shot through her lyrics. Compare the despair of Amy’s “You go back to her and I go back to black” to Beyonce’s “If you liked it then you should have put a ring on it”.
What Beyonce says to women is: He broke your heart? Move on! You deserve better! What Amy says is: He broke your heart? I understand. Join me, destroyed, in the gutter, drowning in sorrow.
Music is the most emotional art form. It pierces the heart, heals the soul, comforts and destroys. But is any art worth dying for? I don’t think so. And I don’t believe that Amy Winehouse died for her art. She died because she couldn’t control her addictions.
Amy’s sensitivity to pain meant that she made music that touched the world. That same sensitivity led her to try and block out the pain with drink and drugs.
If only she’d realised that they weren’t her salvation, but her ruin. That they made the agony worse, not better.
In the end, Amy’s pain, talent, drinking and drug-taking all seemed to merge into a mad, dark chaos. A chaos that murdered a world-beating musical gift, and, more importantly, killed a young, vibrant and charismatic woman.
Oh, Amy. Back To Black.
