'Best actor' will give reading at festival
THE man described as the best actor of his generation will be appearing at the Kenton Theatre as part of the Henley Literary Festival. In what is seen as a remarkable coup for the festival Simon Russell Beale will be appearing with Craig Brown in readings from his new book One On One.
Russell Beale has a well-earned reputation as an actor on stage, in film and on television but is best-known for his work in the theatre and is currently employed by the National Theatre. The 50-year-old was a pupil at St Paul’s Cathedral School and began acting at Clifton College.
His glittering career has seen him play stage roles as diverse as Hamlet and Uncle Vanya to Spamalot. On television he won a BAFTA award for his performance in Dance To The Music Of Time and has latterly had a lead role in the series Spooks. He has received many awards for his work, such as the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor for Uncle Vanya in 2003.
At Henley he will be appearing with Eleanor Bron who starred with the Beatles in Help! and appeared with Michael Cain in Alfie as well as a raft of the best of British television shows.
Daily Mail columnist Brown’s book relates 101 chance meetings each told in 1,001 words and examines the curious nature of different types of meeting, from the oddity of encounters with the royal family (who start giggling during a recital by T S Eliot) to meetings between old and young (Mark Twain terrifying Rudyard Kipling) and between young and old (the 23-year-old Sarah Miles having her leg squeezed by the nonagenarian Bertrand Russell), to contemporary random encounters (George Galloway meeting Michael Barrymore on Celebrity Big Brother).
Literary Festival director Sue Ryan said: “We are very lucky to get an actor of the stature of Simon appearing at the festival. Craig Brown has appeared before and is extremely popular. When Craig said he was hoping to get Simon to come down we were very excited and we have since had confirmation that Nicholas Hytner has agreed to release him for his appearance on Saturday, October 2.
“It is fitting that he is appearing at the Kenton Theatre and those people lucky enough to get tickets should have a really memorable evening.”
Programmes for the Festival, which runs for five days from September 28 to October 2, are available at the Bell Bookshop, the Town Hall, Hotel du Vin and the River and Rowing Museum.
