A colorful way to go green; Cast-off paint primes recycling business for a ...
Jim Cosby, owner of ePaint Recycling, had been involved with paint and paint sales for 15 years before developing his own latex paint recycling firm in 2010. The Kalamazoo resident is currently operating out of 10,000 square feet of space in an old World War I Army supply barracks. "New" equipment bought from a paint company that closed a warehouse near Chicago is expected to increase ePaint's ability to fill 1,000 cans per hour instead of the current 1,000 cans of paint per week. BATTLE CREEK — Jim Cosby’s idea to create a business that recycles latex paint took three years to apply. But after its first 14 months, ePaint Recycling already needs to expand its manufacturing space, and Cosby has hired two workers.
“Sixty-nine million gallons of paint a year end up in landfills — 10 percent of all paint purchased in America becomes excess,” Cosby said recently during an interview in his “new” 10,000-square-foot location at 56 Leonard Wood Drive in Battle Creek — a World War I supply barracks located near Fort Custer.
The 43-year-old Kalamazoo resident, whose foundation in the paint business started when he was in high school, said, “Instead of letting it solidify and get tossed into a landfill, we reuse it.”
Cosby will happily take in extra or unused cans of latex paint, regardless of the amount, the age or the condition. He regularly collects from private citizens who drop cans off and those who ask for a pickup, he said. He charges $2 per can. Cosby also has a contract with Emmet County — others are pending — and a recycling firm that contracts with several counties on the east side of the state to bring thousands of cans to his site.
Some are unopened cans of paint that retail for $45 per gallon, he said. Some are decades old, solidified, frozen or sour. The contents that can’t be recycled into any of the 14 colors ePaint Recycling currently offers for indoor use — exterior paint production is pending — are dumped into separate containers for use as dye for wood mulch or concrete tinting.
The paint that is simply too bad to use is trashed, but the containers, metal or plastic, are recycled and kept out of landfills, he said. Less than 3 percent of what ePaint Recycling takes in is too bad to use, Cosby said.
EPaint Recycling has single-handedly kept an estimated 50,000 paint cans out of the trash since the business started, Cosby said.

What's In a Paint Color Name? - DIY Life
My first apartment was on the last street before you officially crossed over into "the wrong side of the tracks," but it was a brownstone and that made it OK. (It was also relatively affordable, meaning that I only had to live off of ramen noodles for only one cliched week out of every four.) We all have delusions of the places we'd like to live in when we finally achieve adulthood, and for me it was a small apartment in a brownstone. Small, because I would only fill up a larger apartment with junk, and a brownstone, because it would make a studio apartment seem impressive. I had thought about the hypothetical brownstone apartment whenever my suburban existence felt like the first verse of a Bruce Springsteen song. The town, and its surrounding satellite developments, was not so much a town but a life decision. Families were content to stay there and just not do much else, which gave the area an air of a time capsule. I went to the same high school that my mother did, followed seven years later by my brother. Thinking back about how pleasant this actually was, I can only think of what a jerk I was to judge it. But at the time, the hypothetical brownstone offered an escape hatch into a life of glamour and sophistication, instead of one marked by old drugstores and track meets. I knew the apartment so well in my head that when I moved in, I quickly embarked on a paint job that I had already undertaken in my imagination. The living area, a long shoebox distinguished with a and fancy moldings, would be painted in a rich coral like the home in The Royal Tenenbaums . I went out and immediately grabbed the first coral I saw, then came back to the apartment and brushed on the paint. So back to the paint store. I'd have to go with something lighter towards the pink family to get the effect I was trying for. Scrutinizing the paint chips as if they held the meaning of life, or at least the winning lottery numbers, I ended up with one winner, a pink tinged with hints of warmth. I looked towards the bottom of the paint color card to see what the name was: ' Tickled Pink .' A name tinged with hints of judgment. The color was right but the name, as silly as it sounds, was just wrong. I was a grown woman who saved her pennies and moved into a place all by myself. I was starting my first real job, which I had worked through countless sleepless nights in order to get (again) all by myself, without any connections or anything. I had made it out of the old town.
