Area businesses say ethanol troubling for machinery that has smaller engines
Cars and trucks are capable of running on E-10 gasoline - gas that contains 10 percent ethanol - but it may not be so good for boats and other machinery with small engines.
Service departments at Raystown Lake say there are seeing a significant increase in the number of boats being brought in with engine problems.
"We have had about four totally shut down while on the lake due to the fuel. The ethanol deteriorates the fuel line," said Dan Bardell, service manager at Shy Beaver Boat Center. "The fuel is bad stuff. It is raising havoc."
"It affects the gaskets and fuel pumps, anything the gas goes through because there is water in the ethanol. The gas separates and the engine starts sucking water," said Beth Morningstar, parts and service adviser at Jim's Anchorage. "We have seen a lot of carburetor and fuel pump problems."
Federal regulations require that gasoline be blended with up to 10 percent ethanol. That fuel can also have a negative impact on lawnmowers and other small machines.
"We have seen this problem for the last three years. We have see about a 10 percent increase this year," said Janet Mowery, owner of the Small Engine Shop, Altoona. "It is mostly with the two-cycle engines - lawn mowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers and chain saws. They are now talking about going to E-15. That will affect four-cycle engines; they will start blowing up next."
There are several problems with ethanol, said Bill Lindsey, spokesman for Star Brite Corp. in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., which manufactures a fuel stabilizer which helps engines using E-10 run smoother.
Gums form in the fuel tank and fuel delivery systems as ethanol fuels age. However, ethanol also acts as a solvent that strips away and disperses the buildup back into the fuel, according to Star Brite.
"It can clog the filter, carburetor and injector and can cause fuel starvation issues," Lindsey said.
Ethanol fuels break down quickly, and Lindsay said as it begins to evaporate, the fuel loses octane and becomes stale. That makes engines lose power, he said.
"The lawnmower may not have as much power and have trouble going through thick areas of grass," Lindsey said.
Using an additive is necessary to keep the small engines running properly.
"The best thing to do is use the fuel as quickly as possible and keep it as fresh as possible," Lindsey said. "Find a treatment that will stabilize and enhance the combustibility of the fuel.
