Tout le monde trouve parfaitement normal que le MacBook Air ne dispose pas d'un graveur de DVD, qu'Apple appelle depuis toujours le Superdrive, le concept de cet ordinateur étant l'extrême légèreté et finesse. Aussi, vous l'avez remarqué, le nouveau Mac mini a abandonné le sien (voir dépêche : Nouveau Mac mini ! ), alors qu'aucun impératif de finesse ni de poids ne s'applique au Mac mini, et que cet ordinateur a souvent toute sa place à côté d'une télévision. Également, avec la suppression du MacBook (voir dépêche : Le MacBook a disparu ! ), Apple ne laisse plus le choix à ceux ne désirant pas dépenser plus de 1 000 € pour un ordinateur portable. Le message est donc clair : Apple tente un véritable passage en force, et considère que le CD et le DVD (sans oublier le Blu Ray) sont morts, remplacés par le téléchargement. Cela ne sera peut-être pas réalisé immédiatement pour toutes les gammes, mais il faut s'attendre à la suppression progressive du lecteur de disques sur tous les ordinateurs pommés. On ne compte plus les sondages et études montrant que le Superdrive est de moins en moins utilisé. Sur un ordinateur portable, il pèse lourd et prend beaucoup de place. Ainsi, sa suppression est parfaitement justifiée, sachant que les utilisateurs le regrettant pourront toujours acquérir un modèle externe, vendu par Apple 79 € mais disponible chez certains constructeurs pour environ 30 €. Avec cette mesure, Apple peut libérer de l'espace et du poids, et donc proposer des ordinateurs plus légers et plus fins. L'espace gagné peut hypothétiquement être utilisé pour autre chose, par exemple pour une batterie plus grande ou un deuxième emplacement pour disque dur ou SSD. Sur un ordinateur fixe comme l'iMac ou le Mac mini, les gains apportés par la suppression du Superdrive sont plus difficiles à percevoir. En effet, ces ordinateurs ne sont pas destinés à être déplacés quotidiennement, et les rendre moins volumineux et plus légers n'est pas une priorité. Des économies sont bien réalisées, mais nous vous laissons faire le calcul sachant qu'un modèle externe peut aisément se trouver pour 30 € l'unité, toutes taxes comprises. C'est donc un choix politique. Avec le Mac App Store et plus généralement iTunes, Apple tente d'imposer sa vision de l'environnement numérique.
