Southcoast Wound Care helps patients find right treatments

Thanks to the staff at the Southcoast Wound Care Center, Bruno Rios-Martinez is able to stand on his own two feet.

In July 2010, Rios-Martinez was a heavy-machine operator living in Puerto Rico. One day, after removing his work boots, Rios-Martinez noticed the two smallest toes on his left foot were black. He had been battling diabetes for a number of years and did not have his blood sugar levels under control. This condition led Rios-Martinez to develop gangrene, forcing doctors to remove the infected toes. Rios-Martinez had family in the Fall River area, so he traveled to the United States in search of a second opinion. After visiting the Charlton Memorial Hospital emergency room, he met with Dr. John Quatromoni and the staff of the Southcoast Wound Care Center, which is located inside the hospital. Quatromoni knew Rios-Martinez would have a long road ahead of him, but he wanted to take a shot at salvaging the foot. Since opening in March 2010, the Southcoast Wound Care Center has admitted 488 patients. They treat a wide range of ailments, including post traumatic accidents, surgical wounds that won’t heal and post radiation ulcers. The staff includes a vascular surgeon, plastic surgeon, general surgeon and four registered nurses. The center serves as a one-stop location where patients can get the benefit of a wide range of expertise. That was one of the keys to Rios-Martinez’s remarkable recovery.

Besides giving a more accurate reading of the center of the low pressure and its strength, other benefits from the aircraft recon mission is better initialization data for the models. This will provide us with a better understanding of the possible trajectory and strength forecast of the soon to be Emily. However, people living in Puerto Rico should not wait to prepare themselves after the system is named and closer to the island. Even without better initialization data, the models are consistent that the system will pass over or very close to Puerto Rico as a strong Tropical Storm or even a Cat. 1 Hurricane. This system is expected to be on the closest point to Puerto Rico between Tuesday in the afternoon and Wednesday morning.

A few remarks to Puerto Ricans seeing this page. A hurricane or Tropical Storm is not a point in the map. Even if the trajectory does not go over Puerto Rico, the effects of this system will surely be felt. Do not take unnecessary risks and prepare yourself with time. Several pages with information on how to get ready for a storm are available on the internet.
