'Wiping out' cancer

Local women are putting their creative skills to work in the fight against cancer.
They are knitting and selling multi-colored dishcloths for Relay For Life in an effort to raise awareness about cancer and generate money for research.
Each dishcloth has a cancer ribbon in the middle of it, and the different colors represent the various types of cancer that exist.
Vicki Windham is the owner of Prairie Hand Knits, 109 East Fifth Street, in North Platte. She said it's the first year her store has had a Relay team.
"Betty Howlett came up with the idea," said Windham. "We have a knitting and crocheting group that gets together at the store, and we decided we needed a fun summer project that would serve a purpose. Betty had kidney cancer, and she suggested we make dishcloths to 'help wipe out cancer.'"
The project has since expanded outside of the group. About 90 dishcloths have been made altogether.
"There's some ladies down in McCook that have another 25 for us," said Windham. Val Schwarting of North Platte turned in 25 of her own Tuesday morning.
"I tried to do one every day," she said. "I had a friend who passed away from cancer, and I just think it's a good way to raise awareness about the need for a cure."
The cause also hits home with Windham, whose mother is a colon cancer survivor. It's part of why she's encouraging her customers to join the effort. She gives a 15 percent discount on yarn if they do and also offers free cancer ribbon patterns.
"A lot of people are using the project as a way to clean out their stashes of scrap yarn," said Windham.
