Google Docs Viewer in Gmail adds support for ZIP and RAR files

No one closely knit with Gmail and its Google Docs Viewer would have appreciated receiving ZIP or RAR files until now. That’s because a post on the official Gmail blog has let on about support for viewing these two archive type files being added to the e-mail service just recently.

By now, most people will have figured that Google Docs Viewer is designed to allow people to view files received through the e-mail facility right in the browser without actually downloading them. Hitting up the View option surfaces all of the files contained in the archive, their types and the size of each.

Activating a menu via the Actions button lets users peruse stuff accommodated by Docs Viewer and print out those with PDF support. The Save to Google Docs and Download options are proffered for all files. Additionally, the post also says that there’s no need to download whole archives as opposed to select files anymore.

So a user who may wish to extract RAR content from a ZIP file can simply click on it to access the embedded archive. This new feature is being extended to Google Docs for mobile too. Each sort of compatible file is accompanied by a link to view.

Adding the ZIP and RAR formats to the supported types in Google Docs Viewer brings the total of viewable files up to more than a dozen. So users can now view .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx, .pdf, .pages, .ai, .psd, .tif, .dxf, .svg, .ttf, .eps, .ps, .zip or .rar content through Gmail without having to download it.
