Book buyers mourn as Borders goes out of business
The Borders in Bridgewater may still be open for business, but Ginny Banon knows the bookstore’s end is near.
Yesterday, the bankrupt retail chain won court approval to liquidate its nearly 400 locations, including the 10 still scattered throughout New Jersey. Not even a last-minute offer from Books-A-Million to buy as many as 35 Borders stores could lift Banon’s spirits.
"I’m really grief-stricken," said the Bridgewater resident and former employee.
Despite a steady flow of customers shuffling in — the cool air providing a respite from the 100-degree heat — the store’s fate was evident. Signs advertised a clearance sale on "Moby Dick" and "Atlas Shrugged" T-shirts and employees talking amond themselves said the store’s cafe would soon be closing.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Martin Glenn in Manhattan approved Borders’ request to wind down the 40-year-old bookstore chain, which was once the second-largest in the country. Borders, with about 10,700 employees — including 275 in New Jersey — said this week that it planned to close all of its stores in phases by September.
A combination of the hard-charging digital reader industry and mounting competition from warehouse retailers devastated its bottom line. In just six years, Borders went from more than 1,200 bookstores as far away as Singapore to just 399 today.
The last-minute offer from Books-A-Million — which operates in the southeast U.S. — is still being negotiated, and may save 1,000 to 1,500 jobs, said Borders attorney Andrew Glenn. It has offered to buy about 21 super-stores and nine smaller stores, with an option on five more stores, lawyers said. The super-stores include a site outside Atlantic City.
Still, the Borders going-out-of-business sales begin today, after the company failed to reach an agreement with the one bidder that offered to keep it running. Glenn called it "a bittersweet day. There are a lot of sad people around the country," he said in a packed courtroom yesterday.
Standing inside the Flemington Borders on Route 202 in Raritan Township, Nicole Domanski counts herself as one of the bereaved.
"I was really upset when I found out about that," Domanski, 25, of Neshanic Station, said of the chain’s closing. She prefers Borders to rival Barnes & Noble — now the dominant U.S. book chain — for the atmosphere and rewards card.
