Car show raises money for Make-A-Wish kids

All the proceeds still went to granting wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation has touched children such as Joey Boeckel, whose wish to go to Walt Disney World was granted in 2005.

"Each year, we have been doing a little to give back," said Joey's mother, Sherri Boeckel.

Last year, the Boeckels held a truck convoy in Adams County, where they raised about $3,200.

"We're trying to put the fun back in fundraiser," said Sherri Boeckel, who organized the car show at Haar's Drive-In in Carroll Township.

Mary Zook of Mechanicsburg -- who attended with her husband, Lenny -- said she doesn't know anyone directly helped by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, but she has contributed to them, as well as to similar organizations, in the past.

"Thank God for healthy children," Zook said as she glanced at her granddaughter, Jillian.

The Zooks brought their own vehicle to show at the event, "but my favorite is the Chevy Bumblebee from the movie 'Transformers,'" Zook said.

"It's all about the kids," said Keith Waltmine, of Stewartstown, who showed off his '71 Chevy Nova, which he's had for about seven years.

"The kids deserve a chance at life. We've had our time at life; it's their turn," said attendee Harry Loranzo, of Middletown.

The Boeckels hope to raise $65,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation this year through fundraisers. Here are some of the other events they are planning:

Yard sale: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 18-19 and 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 20 at Magic Elm Skateland, 625 W. Elm Ave. in Hanover.

Bowling: 1-3 p.m. Sept. 18 at South Hanover Bowling Center. Unlimited bowling for $60 per lane.

Black Rose Rollers: 6 p.m. Nov. 6 at Magic Elm Skateland. Cost is $5 per person.
