Karsten Knight novel on 'Wildefire'
Maynard can add another name to its list of success stories to come out of Maynard High School when author Karsten Knight’s first book “Wildefire” is released on Tuesday, July 26.
If that name doesn’t ring a bell, perhaps this one does: Kyle Murphy.
Murphy, 26, is a 2003 graduate of Maynard High School . He opted to use the pen name Karsten Knight to be more marketable when he signed with publisher Simon and Schuster.
“There are a lot of Kyle Murphys out there,” he said. “Karsten is my middle name. I’m named after my great-uncle who is from Norway. Knight is my mother’s maiden name.”
Knight was involved in many extracurricular activities at Maynard High School. He had a radio show on WAVM, ran track, played for the golf team, was active in the band, was class valedictorian, and worked on the school’s literary magazine. He also had the unusual experience of being signed by an agent during his senior year.
“I was a precocious kid. I started writing my first book when I was 9. I was into the “Goosebumps” books [by R.L. Stein] and decided I could write too. I basically sent out letters for years and years before striking the jackpot and finding an agent at 17. I worked with him a few years but nothing sold,” Knight said.
He had the chance to meet Stein, his favorite childhood author, at the Barnes & Noble in Framingham a decade ago.
This month, Knight will come full circle when a launch party for “Wildefire” will take place Thursday, July 28 at the Framingham Barnes & Noble. Knight will read selections from his book and sign copies.
“I hope it will be a good reading. I signed my first book there this week and it was crazy. I’ve seen review copies that were paper back and holding the hard copy I felt like I was in shock. The first autographed copy I did my signature was jagged,” he said.
After graduating from high school, Knight earned a bachelors degree in English from Holy Cross and recently completed his master’s in fine art in Writing for Children from Simmons College in Boston, where he now lives.
Wildefire is the first book in a trilogy about reincarnated gods and demi-gods who attend a boarding school on the West coast. The first two books were written while Knight attended Simmons and he is currently working to finalize the third.

As well as Polynesian goddesses, there are Greek Sirens, a Haitian thunder god, and the Egyptian goddess of the dead, Isis. While he is still working on the last book of the trilogy, he is starting to think about his next project.
