High school teams hit practice field Monday

Dickerson is the center of attention for the Pine Belt as he takes over the Tigers’ helm after four seasons as the offensive coordinator at South Panola. During Dickerson’s four seasons at Batesville, South Panola only lost two games.

Since taking over at HHS on Feb. 1, Dickerson has put the Tigers through spring drills and summer workouts.

“The kids are in great shape,” Dickerson said. “They’ve been working extremely hard, and I think we’re going to carry that over into the first week of practice.”

Summer workouts have become ever more important as the time between the first day of practice and the first game of the season has shrunk.

Teams can play jamborees as early as Aug. 11, and the first game of the season is the following week.

“I’ve been very pleased with the summer,” said Bassfield coach Lance Mancuso, whose Yellowjackets open the season against Seminary.

“We’ve got a lot of talented players; it’s just getting them some experience. We lost a lot from last year, but I think as soon as they get up to game speed, we’ll be all right.”

Bassfield has lofty expectations after going 36-8 and winning the Region 8-2A championship the past three seasons.

In 2008, the Yellowjackets reached the Class 2A South State finals, in 2009, they won the state championship and last year advanced to the third round before losing to Taylorsville 42-41 in overtime.

Like Bassfield, Hattiesburg will be a young team, with only eight seniors starting, and Dickerson cautions fans that the Tigers will be a work in progress.

“We’re going to have some growing pains,” Dickerson said. “Our goal is to get better every week.”

Dickerson said he sat with six of his senior leaders last week and talked about goals.
“Obviously, the long-term goal is to win a state championship,” Dickerson said.
“But I asked them to think about their short-term goals. They thought about it, and the first goal was to be the best-conditioned team in Mississippi. Second was playing as a team, and the third was being more disciplined on the field. When you’ve got the kids saying these things, it means a lot.

I grew up in an energetic family with 3 brothers and 3 sisters. I have always enjoyed making things - learning to use the tools and properties/qualities of materials. My favorite place to renew is in a Forest, Alpine Meadow, or on a Lake; all are wonderful templates for living simply & elegantly! I started drawing at age 5 and worked in several media, eventually taking a minor in Fine Art along with my Science degrees. Later studies in Fiber, Surface Design, Book Arts and Painting support my work today. I continue to study painting, and recently attended plein air workshops in Hood River, Oregon and in Italy. I retired from teaching where I loved the opportunity to create the learning environment and to witness the human mind at play with very often beautiful results. Now I work at my house, West Alley Studio.
