Cruise nights featuring classic vehicles draw big crowds
WATERBORO – Time travel may not be possible, but that doesn’t stop those who share a love for the cars and trucks of yesteryear from gathering to view the vehicles on display at weekly shows in Waterboro and Sanford.
For the past five years, the Blast from the Past diner in Waterboro has hosted a classic car show every Friday night from May through September. Shain’s of Maine in Sanford hosts a similar event Wednesday nights. For the car owners, it’s a chance to show off their prized vehicle. For others, it’s a chance to remember when.
Linda and Larry Plourde, owners of the diner on Sokokis Trail in Waterboro, said they started the car show, which is limited to vehicles 25 years and older, at the request of several classic car owners who were also customers.
“It’s all about the cars,” Linda Plourde said. “People come to look and talk. Friday is a night to come out and enjoy the cars. It’s a good night out.”
Plourde said she and her husband were not classic car admirers before starting the show, but since then, her husband has purchased a 1930 Ford Vicky hot rod from one of the regulars.
She said the show draws between 80 and 110 classic cars every week. The event also brings in a good crowd for the restaurant.
But it’s not all business.
“We’ve made some good friends with the (car) people here,” Plourde said.
Bob Marshall of Lebanon agreed. He was there on July 22 showing off his 1950 Ford truck.
“This is one of the best cruise nights going,” he said. “It’s a real social couple hours.”
In addition to the classic vehicles on display, the Plourdes also provide a disc jockey who plays 1950s rock music, and hold a raffle each week.
Marshall said the time, effort and cost that goes into owning and maintaining a classic vehicle is justified when he gets a sign of approval from other drivers.
“That’s when you know you have a winner,” Marshall said. “When you drive down the road and get a thumbs up.”
Unlike some classic car owners, he drives his 1950 truck every day.
“These vehicles are meant to be driven,” he said.
Marshall is retired now, and said restoring and maintaining his 61-year-old truck is a lot of fun and gives him “a chance to play a little.”
However, he is in the market for a 1956 Thunderbird and is therefore trying to sell the truck. Meanwhile, his wife drives a classic Corvette.
