Years of heartbreak vanish with victory

And we all laughed, and Menard laughed, and here it was, the Hallmark moment, coming at you all warm and fuzzy on a warm and fuzzy day. Because on this day, the son, Paul Menard, hand-delivered a dream to the father that was 35 years in the making. And because there had been so many other days here when John Menard’s dream got kicked in the teeth, and even became a full-blown nightmare one dark and awful May.
And so as Paul Menard hammered down toward the checkers Sunday afternoon, and even the most sun-blasted soul in the place could see that an onrushing Jeff Gordon was not going to catch him, I saw another day, 15 years in the rearview. I saw a day that was this day’s polar opposite, as grim as this one was joyous.
I saw a day when flowers wilted in the unseasonable May heat in front of the Menard Racing garages in Gasoline Alley. I saw a flag lolling at half-staff against its halyard. I saw John Menard trying and failing to find the words to describe Scott Brayton winning the pole for him for the Indianapolis 500 and then dying in a practice crash six days later.
Sunday he rummaged around for words again, God bless him. But for all the right reasons this time.
“My heart is going a thousand miles a minute,” he said. “It’s just unbelievable … in a way it’s our whole family that has been at the Speedway for so long. We’ve all tried so hard.”
And here it was, finally, the Speedway’s gift to a man who’s either been a sponsor or owner at this place for 3 1/2 decades: His boy winning the Brickyard 400, for team owner Richard Childress, in a Chevy bearing Menard’s name and colors. And here, too, finally, was a gift for the rest of us.

Instead, we got the race’s only four-time winner, Gordon, trying to pull off a miracle with one last wild sprint in the best car on the track and coming up just short. He was 12 seconds behind with 12 laps to run. He was 9.3 seconds off the pace with 11 laps left. And then, as the half-empty old museum drew in a breath and held it, here he came: From 10th to eighth to sixth to fifth to, finally, second with two laps to go, and Menard hanging on for dear life, his lead down to less than 1 second.
