Though it has been opened just over a week, the Tilted Kilt continues to fend off criticism for its scantily clad waitresses.

During the Schaumburg Village Board meeting Tuesday — where approval was being sought for additional signs, a patio, video games and pool tables — residents took the opportunity to speak out about their distaste for the establishment and the waitresses’ skimpy costumes.

“I don’t think we need that in Schaumburg,” said Amy Schutzenhofer, 42, who attended the meeting with her 13-year-old daughter.

Schutzenhofer asked trustees at what point do morals and values end in Schaumburg.

She also said she felt the proximity of the proposed patio to the busy roadway with the waitresses in their costumes would be a distraction to drivers passing by and inappropriate for children to see.

The restaurant is located at  1140 E. Higgins Road.

Chuck Hunt, 66, who has lived in Schaumburg for 34 years said the restaurant and its scantily clad wait staff send the wrong message and degrades women.

“The men that come in there want more than just hot wings,” he said.

The residents cited Evanston, which recently denied the restaurant a permit to do business in the town.

But village officials said the restaurant was not in any code violations and was not operating illegally in anyway to justify disallowing it in Schaumburg.

David Abraham, director of operations for the Tilted Kilt in Schaumburg, said he understands the concerns, but insists his restaurant — which does not have a dance club or band area as do other Tilted Kilts — is a “good establishment with good food, good TVs” and a zero tolerance harassment policy for guests and co-workers.

“I don’t want any of our girls to be harassed,” he said.

As for concerns over the patio, he said at 90 feet off the road it would be difficult to see a waitress on the patio.

“You can’t even see the building much less a person standing on the patio,” he said.

Village President Al Larson said the village does have morals and does not see anything wrong with the Tilted Kilt. He said the village has shut down businesses in the past that had allowed inappropriate activities, though didn’t say which ones. He said the addition of a patio would be an attractive addition to the restaurant, as it is at many area restaurants.

Village trustees approved the patio and additional signage but denied the video games.
