Hardwood floors FuEL his future
His father is a clinical psychologist, he's a graduate of St. John's-Ravenscourt, but at 18 Graham Hawryluk found his calling that was a little off the wall -- laying and refinishing hardwood floors.
Four years later his Headingley company, Meticulous Wood Flooring Inc., has seven employees. It may be the only purveyor of a Swedish dustless refinishing technology and his company is now reclaiming and reprocessing old hardware into something reusable.
He's also the lone Manitoban nominated for the inaugural FuEL (Future Entrepreneurial Leaders) Awards, a new program developed by Profit magazine and Rogers Communications to spotlight young entrepreneurs.
A relative neophyte in a business dominated by veteran craftsmen, Hawryluk, 23, now employs folks twice his age.
"That's not actually been such a big thing," he said. "We're all kind of like family."
Asked how he came to learn about the business, he said he figured it out as he went.
"I was a lifer at SJR," he said. "Everyone was in training to become doctors and lawyers and scientists and I got a summer job at 15 with a gymnasium flooring company."
He returned to the job in subsequent summers and it turned into something he loved doing.
"I was a skinny little SJR boy who didn't know a router from jigsaw," he said. "But as it turned out I grew a taste for it."
Now he's introducing innovative new technologies, using environmentally friendly water-based coatings and utilizing reclaimed flooring that would otherwise take up space in landfills.
On top of all that, he's just been voted onto the executive of the Headingley Regional Chamber of Commerce.
By the sounds of it, he is exactly the kind of entrepreneur Ian Portsmouth had in mind when he was putting together the idea for the FuEl Awards.
The editor and associate publisher of Toronto-based Profit magazine, Portsmouth said the primary reason for the awards was to support young entrepreneurs and inspire more young people to consider entrepreneurship as a career choice.
"Emerging economies are developing huge middle-classes that are becoming highly educated and that will be our competition in 10 to 20 years from now," said Portsmouth. "Unless we inspire more entrepreneurial activity in Canada it will be difficult especially given our demographic challenges."
There are about 100 nominees, none of whom are screened, other than to meet the fundamental criteria of being under 30 and the proprietor of a business operating in Canada.
