WOSTER: Top Bear Butte evokes feeling 'far deeper than peaceful'

My 3-year-old granddaughter climbed Bear Butte with her mom and dad during a camping trip in the Black Hills earlier this summer.

Reports from the field say the little ball of energy made it all the way to the top of the winding trail on her own power. Her folks sent a file of pictures to prove it, and the child seems to be smiling in just about every image.

Apparently she needed a little help at least some of the time during the trip back down the trail to the bottom of the mountain. Hey, I’m not going to hold that against her. The time I climbed Bear Butte, I made it to the top and back down, but I’d have accepted help gladly — going up and coming down.

I thought the climb was a fairly significant test. It should be noted that, while I was considerably younger when I conquered the mountain, I was quite a ways from my best fighting shape. Let’s be honest. I couldn’t have put together enough frequent-flyer miles to get to the same time zone as fighting shape.

I made the ascent because it seemed like an interesting thing to do. I was a newspaper reporter at the time, working a free-wheeling assignment to go on the road, find some interesting people to interview, places to visit and things to do, interview those people, visit those places and do those things, then get back home and write about the experiences.

Those were without question the most enjoyable assignments in newspapering for anyone who loves the state and its people. I’m a full-time introvert, but on those assignments, I pushed myself to initiate conversations with strangers, took chances on things I normally would avoid and generally acted kind of like a normal person.

One of my first on-the-road assignments after I joined the Argus Leader staff back in the late 1980s was to take a map, pick out 10 communities, travel to each of them and find a character worth a feature story. The editor said the communities should be selected so that I covered the entire state in my travels. Other than that, the towns, the characters and the types of stories I wrote were up to me. I wound up driving into one community after another, walking into a café or grain elevator or barbershop and saying, “Who’s the biggest character in your town?

And while I did enjoy the bike show being held inside, it was a little different a bike show on dirt. But that is where it was in the arena where they have the county fair livestock show. But it worked and the LnW won 1st place in the cruisers class. It was a very good show this 07 Dyna came in 2nd in my class and won best paint, the pic does not show what an awesome paint job it had on it. I talked to the owner the bike was paint in Calif. I wish I had taken some better pic of it. And when I seen this scoot I thought JayDee is here but of course it wasn't his, but it did remind me of his ride. And of course what is a bike show without some strange rides, this dude had this one rigged to shot flames out the exhaust. It was a great day and I had a great time, need I say more.
