Northeast Ohio creations: Inventions with local roots

What do the potato chip, the padded bicycle seat and the wind turbine have in common? They were products invented in the Cleveland area. Many of the products listed became household names and a few of them went on to become part of the fabric of American culture.

Some of the items created here made life more comfortable, some could be view as dangerous, and others shape the way civilization evolved. The Plain Dealer takes a look at the origins of these hometown inventions and a few other notable products that have roots in the Northeast Ohio region.

Here are a few of the items that were cultivated in the area.

Thompson submachine gun --  The notorious "Tommy Gun" of Roaring Twenties' gangster fame, also renowned as the Thompson submachine gun used by GIs on nearly every battlefield of World War II, was born nearly a century ago in a small workshop in Cleveland. From its inception in 1918, the gun quickly developed a reputation for reliability and firepower, becoming a prominent symbol in the lore of both 20th century crime and warfare.

Premade Burger Patties --  Sam Stein's success story starts with a teenage runaway selling indiments to area restaurants. Then the Cleveland-born child of Hungarian immigrants had an idea he thought could save his customers time and money, the often-repeated family story goes.
