Kahne a smash hit at Grove
When the World of Outlaws come to Williams Grove, it's always a big event. Throw in a name like Kasey Kahne, and the event gets even bigger.Kahne was undoubtedly the story Friday when, during a heat race, his car was nudged in turn 4 and hit some outside loose dirt, causing his car to flip completely over the fence without touching it and actually land upright on four wheels. Kahne's car was smashed, but he was not hurt.
Kahne then used previously injured (last week in Canada) Fred Rahmer's car and continued racing in order to get points for cash at the close of the season.
Chad Kemenah set the fast time of 107 mph, and qualifying heat wins for the attending 44 sprint cars went to Steve Kinser, Lucas Wolfe, Brian Swindell and Sammy Swindell.
In the feature, Greg Hodnett grabbed the lead past Kinser on the fourth lap, and a lap-16 caution re-start resulted in a pile up of six cars, including Cody Darrah, Brian Montieth, Jason Meyers, Doug Esh, Craig Dollansky and Stevie Smith for a full-field red-flag stop.
In the restarting single-file re-start, Hodnett held onto the lead by a large margin for the win, collecting $8,000 in his 46th career victory for his new owner, John Trone. Hodnett, the winner of six of the last 12 Outlaw events, finished ahead of Steve Kinser, Daryn Pittman, Sammy Swindell and Kahne.
The 12-lap $4,000-to-win Morgan Cup Challenge went to Jason Sides, who will display the Morgan Hughes Sterling Silver Cup trophy at the World of Outlaws headquarters in North Carolina until next season.
Saturday at Williams Grove, Jason Meyers held off Pa. Posse member Stevie Smith to score a win in the final round of the Williams Grove Summer Nationals, worth $20,000. Meyers started on the pole of the 30-lap A-Main feature when a second-lap flip by Paul McMahan (who wasn't hurt) on the front stretch re-bunched the field.
Smith and Greg Hodnett were fighting to the front, but Jason Meyers held off all comers en route to the Summer National win stripe, finishing ahead of Smith, Donny Schatz, Greg Hodnett and Sammy Swindell.
Williams Grove will host the 410 and 358 sprint cars for a handicapped heat race on Friday, starting at 8 p.m.
Linda's Speedway
Friday night at Linda's Speedway, first-time winner Josh Stoyer passed race leader Dave Williams on the 12th round to win his first 25-lap 270 micro sprint feature. Dave Williams was second, Jason Swavely third, Pete Skias fourth and Richie Hartman fifth.
