LAS VEGAS — It’s difficult enough to predict how the Mountain West Conference will perform on the football field this year.
It’s almost impossible to forecast how several issues surrounding the conference’s bid for automatic-qualifier status in the Bowl Championship Series will be handled.
For starters, nobody knows who will be allowed to vote on the league’s expected request at season’s end to the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee for an exemption from the qualification criteria.
“All we can do is continue to do what we’ve done on the field — and that’s win and perform,” Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson said. “The politics and the rest will come into play and be sorted out.”
Six conferences are guaranteed annual berths in the five-bowl BCS through 2013 — the Pac-12, Big Ten, Southeastern, Atlantic Coast, Big 12 and Big East. The five bowl games are the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange and BCS National Championship Game.
A seventh conference can join that group based on three criteria, with results tabulated from 2008 to 2011. The conference rankings will be based on membership at the end of this season, so the Mountain West gets to count all of the accomplishments of new member Boise State and outgoing member TCU but none of the accomplishments of departed members Utah and BYU.
Boise State, Utah (as a Mountain West member) and TCU have combined for six of the seven BCS appearances by non-AQ members. Those schools are 5-1, with TCU’s loss coming to Boise State.
“There are many who think we’re on the cusp of (AQ status),” second-year UNLV coach Bobby Hauck said. “From the outside looking in, and now being immersed in it, it’s something that’s probably deserved.”
The 2011 season will be critical not just for the wins the Mountain West posts but also for what impression the league — and next year’s newcomers, Fresno State, Nevada and Hawaii of the WAC — leave on the oversight committee.
“It’s an opportunity to show the nation that we are competing at the very highest level and the access point and certainly the revenue distribution is not equitable to what we’re doing,” Thompson said.
The Mountain West must finish in the top six of two categories and produce an abundance of Top 25 teams to automatically earn a BCS berth for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. A new four-year evaluation period began last year for 2014 and beyond.
