These garden beauties can thrive in the dry heat

Xeric gardens are those designed to endure dry weather conditions and, if planted luxuriantly enough, also will tolerate a certain amount of heat. Native wildflowers of various heights, colors and textures are among the best bets for xeriscaping — “xeros,” Greek for dry, added to landscaping. There also are zeroscaped gardens, which use even less water and sparser plantings, artfully interspersed among stones or sculpture.

When the weather behaves the way it has for the past few weeks, I am increasingly fond of the xeric-leaning areas in my flower gardens and tend to think of the rest of the beautiful and needy plants as Janfoolery. I feel like I’d have to become some sort of gardening superheroine, one whose right hand had the capability to turn into a giant adjustable hose nozzle with unlimited water power and whose left hand delivered cooling breezes, to rescue all the water-deprived perennials I have cultivated.

Besides wildflowers, plants such as asters, sunflowers, monardas, salvias, penstemons and yuccas are obvious picks for xeric conditions, but I’d like to nominate a few additional plants that are still blooming and looking pretty in my flower beds despite the less-than-optimum conditions.

Blackberry lily ( Belamcanda chinensis ) is not a native perennial, originating in central Asia and imported to this country as an ornamental. Its sword-shaped foliage makes it an obvious member of the iris family, though its 2-inch blooms are more reminiscent of a lily. The pretty little six-petaled orange flowers atop 3-foot slender stems are covered in red spots, giving rise to the plant’s other common name, leopard lily. Only open for a day, blooms look like twisted orange shells when they close, and an oval seedpod forms at the base of each.

Leopard lily seedpods eventually ripen and burst open, revealing a cluster of shiny dark seeds that closely resemble a blackberry, the source of its common name and the source of future plants as it reseeds itself in my flower beds, though not enough to be pesky.

Records show Thomas Jefferson grew blackberry lilies at Monticello as early as 1807, calling them Chinese Ixia. The flowers have since naturalized and endured in his gardens over the years.

A native perennial with beautiful blue blooms that is outperforming many of its neighboring plants is downy skullcap ( Scutellaria incana ), a member of the mint family. Its two-lipped, tubular flowers occur in hand-size racemes atop 3-foot-tall plants that sport fine-toothed oval leaves. Bumblebees love skullcap’s blue blooms.

Flower Garden Designs – A Guide To Gardening Services And Garden ...

Although most gardening services in the Bristol area commonly offer the same type of services. It will be helpful to know what the general maintenance garden services are. These are primarily employing landscape gardeners to maintain your lawn frequently to keep it attractive, weeding and pruning unwanted plants or dead branches, tree surgery and clearing pathways and driveways of Bristol garden waste. These are basic services that anyone can simply do if they have enough time to actually do it.

Landscaping is a different matter. Landscaping means altering the physical elements of a garden, such as that can be seen evidently. These include flora and fauna, landforms, terrain, bodies of water, elevation, structures such as sheds and fences that need to be installed by humans and weather and lighting conditions.

There are two forms of landscaping known as hard or soft landscaping. Hard landscaping materials technically refers to solid features such as paths, walls, decks, patios, ponds and fencing while soft landscaping refers solely to plants and planting. Of course, most gardens are a combination of the two but for maintenance, you really do not need to do everything all at once, you may start with laying down the groundwork for hard landscaping first.

Garden maintenance is also dependent on the kind of garden you have such as a flower garden, an herb garden, a vegetable garden or a mixture of two or all kinds of gardens. Just like dealing with any form of life, gardening does not have a solid hard facts or rules. Tips about gardening you see in publications and on the web simply serve as a guide as you learn more about gardening. Sooner or later, you will learn to adjust or use makeshift materials of your own. This is because every plant has a different life cycle some grow faster than other while some longer. Some grow fast with sunlight while some do not need light at all. Every plant will have a specific way of growing and needs a specific way of tending to them. This is also the reason why landscaping is more of a science than an art. Landscape architects and garden designers take into consideration the climate, topography and orientation, soil, drainage, irrigation, recreational amenities, fixtures and lighting prior to creating a project proposal. They need to make sure that the plants they plan to use survives throughout the seasons and the present climate while making sure that tending to the garden will not be high maintenance. They also need to make sure that beneath the aesthetics, a functional irrigation system works to be able to easily keep the garden in tip top shape. Of course, they will always take into consideration the kind of design you want if you already have one in mind while advising you if it is sustainable or not. They will incorporate the design you have in mind to one that best suits your home. Silos, sheds and structures also need to be created in such a way that it abides to building laws.
