L.A. Rising beats the heat with Rage and Muse
When the Memorial Coliseum gates opened at noon, the rebel yells echoed through the USC battlefield. Fans from all walks of life converged onto the carpeted grass in anticipation of an historic concert in a long line of historic Los Angeles concerts. Rage Against The Machine are back and they brought some talented people with them at the first annual L.A. Rising concert, held Saturday, July 30th. The large amount of police, security, and alcohol foreshadowed a riot, but with level heads and entertained minds, fans and musicians alike made for some controlled chaos. Three tiers of wristbands–green, yellow, red-were implemented for general admission to create some semblance of order during a festival that fosters disorder. Crowd participation was high throughout the night, with mosh pits starting at 6:30 and going all night, even for Muse. Water was priced higher than at other festivals, but three bucks got you a larger size than other shows and you could refill it at water fountains. With a sun baking overhead and cool breeze flying by, conditions were perfect for a summer concert.
El Gran Silencio hit the stag on time and brought their fiery Latin style to a largely Hispanic crowd. The audience was engaged from the first note, which may have come from the accordion or trombone, as the Chuntaro style band from Mexico employs a variety of instruments to make their distinct sound. The combination rap/rock alongside steady bass and quick bursts of a guitar solo combined into a worthy opener for the day’s festivities, even for those that had been waiting for almost five hours just to see some live music.
Immortal Technique did something most rappers never do: he started early. His hypemen came out before his set and proceeded to get as many cheap pops as they could by naming just about every city in California, expecting a cheer after each one. When Felipe Coronel aka Immortal Technique finally did hit the stage, the crowd was not sure exactly what to expect and it took a few songs to get them on his side. Part of the problem might be Technique’s extremely abrasive lyrical style and brutal content, but those two features are what he’s built his career on thus far and have attracted the most diehard of his fans. His powerful lyrics were on display for the first track “Bush Knocked Down The Towers,” reaching an almost Zeitgeist level of paranoia within his social message. His tactic of positivity within negativity worked for the most part, although having the crowd chant “Fuck cops,” “Peruvian coke,” and “Viva La Revolution” disturbed an already unbalanced unease the staff had with the raucous crowd. Overall, his set was very powerful and the emcee showed why his sets should not be relegated to those in the underground.
