The athlete may report symptoms such as blurred or double vision, dizziness or nausea, may feel foggy or confused, or state they have a headache or pressure in the head.

In the past, a concussion was sometimes judged to be severe only if the athlete lost consciousness.

But this may be inaccurate, according to Beth Larson, a member of the North Coast Concussion Program at Humboldt State because loss of consciousness occurs in only five to eight percent of all concussions.

”People are starting to realize it's not worth it, there's more important things in life, and they want to do the right thing,” said Larson, talking about the proper diagnosis and management of concussions.

To help with accurately detecting concussions, Larson said more schools have had each athlete take a computerized neurocognitive test during the preseason in order to establish an individual's baseline to help professionals assess the athlete in the event a concussion occurs.

The test take only 25-35 minutes and sets a personalized norm in four areas, verbal memory, visual memory, reaction time and motor composite.
