Par 3 closer provides finishing fireworks

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. -- The late Jim McKay of ABC Sports would have described it in reverse order.

McKay, who hosted "Wide World of Sports," was famous for his saying, "The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat."

On Sunday at Old White TPC, the 18th hole yielded the agony of defeat. ... and then the thrill of victory.

Having a par-3 finishing hole is about as far from the norm on the PGA Tour as golfer John Daly's outlandish slacks. A grand total of two tour stops have it -- the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta and West Virginia's very own Greenbrier Classic.

In the inaugural 2010 event on owner Jim Justice's storied grounds of The Greenbrier Resort, the 18th on Sunday gave way to a historic Stuart Appleby putt for 59.

On this particular final day, it gave way to four distinct images.

Three of defeat. One of victory.

First, Gary Woodland, an absolute crusher of golf balls, got to the tee box on the 169-yard delight one shot back of the lead.

A wedge in hand, the 27-year-old popped it strong, appearing destined to climb over the hump in the middle of the green and back toward the pin.

But the golfing gods had other plans, stopping it short and tracking it back until it nestled some 30 feet from the cup.

Feeling cheated, Woodland shook his head in disbelief.

"It was right at it," he said. "I hit a perfect shot. It was just in between clubs and we tried to hit the hard one. .... And you know, when I hit it in the air, it was right at it."

Woodland had to settle for par, meaning his Greenbrier run was over at 9-under, a putt shy of the three-man playoff at 10-under.

That trio -- Bill Haas, Bob Estes and Scott Stallings -- already had one stab at 18. Haas made par to sign for a final round 67. Estes birdied for 64, the best round of the day. And Stallings, playing in the final group, dramatically drilled a 4-footer for a tweet, extending his Greenbrier stay.

So they all came back to the finisher for bonus golf.

Haas smacked his approach to 22 feet, 11 inches. Estes went right of the hole some 11 feet. And Stallings played nearly the exact same shot as he performed beautifully just minutes before. A 9-iron plopped just left of the cup, 6 feet, 9 inches from a win.

Haas putted first and came mere inches short.

Estes went next and pushed his just right.

Now that Utah's fireworks season is ending, I'd sure like to know how much money our state made due to the changes enacted this past year by our infamous Legislature that legalized more kinds of fireworks and extended the season to a whole month.

I clearly remembered when I made my husband cry for the first time and mind you, I am not talking about tears of distress. He actually cried because he was so touched and happy with what I have prepared for him. You see, it was our tenth year wedding anniversary and he promised me to give me a long deserved vacation in the Bahamas. Unfortunately, our finances suddenly crashed so we were forced to just stay home on our anniversary. I honestly did not mind. The important thing was, we were together on our very special day. However, my husband felt really bad about the whole thing so I had a great idea to cheer him up without having to spend much. He loves fireworks and so what I did was, I bought all his favorite fireworks from the mall (it was on sale thank God!) and I prepared all his favorite dishes. We dined outside and suddenly, there was a show of fireworks display and I looked at him and said,”Happy Anniversary honey.”He cried.
