5 Day Miracle Diet Review: Substance or Flash? | All Fad Diets

The 5 Day Miracle Diet is simply a diet intended to help dieters stabilize their blood sugars.  Unless blood sugar is extremely high or extremely low there are very few definitive symptoms that blood sugar levels are out of kilter.  If curious, the only definitive test is using the blood sugar meter.  The theory behind the diet is that spikes and drops in blood sugar are the root cause and perpetuating effect of junk food cravings.  By stabilizing blood sugars, the dieter is able to eliminate cravings for junk food.  This will lead to feeling more energized and being able to lose weight over the long term.  The 5 in the 5 Day Miracle Diet is the number of days necessary to stabilize blood sugar, according to the author Adele Puhn.

By her own admission this diet will not be effective unless it is followed by the letter.  Very strict rules are in place for what foods can be eaten and when.  This is all about timing.  Exercise is also encouraged as it leads to more steady blood sugars as well.  Rule number one is to eat breakfast within 30 minutes of rising.  Blood sugars are normally lowest in the morning and eating soon after waking will prevent time for a craving to crop up.  The breakfast should include both protein and a complex carbohydrate.  Rule number two is that lunch should be eaten before 1 p.m. and dinner is finished no later than 7 p.m.  Rule number three states that snacks should be positioned between meals so that no more than three hours lapses before eating, so a breakdown might look like breakfast at 7 a.m., snack at 10 a.m., lunch at 1 p.m., snack at 4 p.m., and dinner finished up by 7 p.m.  Foods that are high on the glycemic index are eliminated.

While breakfast emphasizes protein and a complex carbohydrate, lunch and dinner focus on protein along with vegetables.  Snacks in between meals are typically fruits that are lower on the glycemic index.  By eliminating starches and sugars, blood sugar spikes are reduced.  Insulin is a hormone that removes excess glucose from the blood by converting it into fat.  By reducing the glucose levels, less fat is produces, and lower sugar intake reduces the amount of insulin in the blood.  Too much insulin in the blood can lead to insulin resistance, which is the precursor to Type II diabetes.

If the dieter suspects any serious problems with their blood sugar then it is time for a candid chat with a doctor.  If the doctor determines that a change in diet is necessary, follow their recommendations.  Extremely low carbohydrate plans have been proven effective at reducing blood sugar and reducing insulin resistance.  The diets are extremely restrictive, best followed under medical supervision, and under the best results can eliminate the need for medications to control blood sugar in diabetics.
