Conservation is serious business for businessman Phil Saunders
The family compound, established 44 years ago, includes a full-time residence set on a wooded hillside that Phil shares with Carole, his wife of 55 years, numerous working barns, 30-plus miles of trails and as the coup de grace a spectacular 6,500-square-foot hunting lodge built along the bank of Sugar Creek in the style of an Adirondack Great Camp."We've kept it pretty much the way he had it," says Saunders, an Eagle Scout who shares King's passion for land and wildlife management as well as his vitality. "The house couldn't be saved; the foundation had collapsed. But if anything, the land is probably better for wildlife now. We're working 100 acres of tillable land and the Scott farm next door that was totally dormant for years has corn on it now." During a recent tour as Saunders' guest, I close my eyes and envision a youthful Floyd and Agnes King at home on their beloved farm. Feeding aspen branches to the beavers, watching a field of milkweed covered with monarch butterflies, observing a mother rabbit tending to her young or them listening to mice roll hickory nuts above the ceiling as they try to sleep. "Floyd was a real character," Saunders says. "A couple times he took me for tours of his place. The last year he was alive, I invited him down to hunt with us. He didn't really hunt but he had dinner and told stories all night. He was what, 92 or something? I remember him saying, 'You know what? I'm so healthy I've never even had a headache.' The next year he died. I kick myself in the tail that I didn't get a picture of him that night at camp." "But this is my pastime," he says of the farm life.
Pulling up to some former dairy barns, Phil shows off his collection of restored antique trucks, including his favorite, a 1955 Mack dump truck painted fire engine red. Another part of a barn houses a basketball court that Saunders, a member of the Livonia High School Athletic Hall of Fame, uses to keep in shape. "This place has had many, many additions. It kind of sneaks up on you," he warns me.
Visitors approach on a half-a-mile of paved road, crossing an authentic covered bridge. The lodge is decorated in wildlife trophies of deer, pheasant, turkey, elk and bear and illuminated by massive antler chandeliers. Phil points out a mounted brown trout he caught in Sugar Creek. He shows me a picture of a giant black bear snapped by a guest right outside the lodge. "It's fun to do stuff for your buddies, that's for sure, and a lot are business acquaintances so business is involved," he says.
