(IFCO/Pastors for Peace)PHARR, TEXAS — Carrying 100 tons of humanitarian aid bound for Cuba, the 22nd annual Interrellgious Foundation of Community Organization/Pastors for Peace Friendshipment Caravan crossed into Mexico at the Pharr International Bridge mid-day Wednesday.
Mike Beilstein, Ward 5 city councilor from Corvallis, and Ed Hemmingson, of Albany, are traveling with the caravan which has repeatedly defied the 1960 U.S. embargo of Cuba.
U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officers X-rayed and searched the caravan vehicles and seized seven computers that were to be donated to Cuban hospitals, schools, and a veterinary clinic.
The customs officers explained that they were ‘detaining,’ not ‘seizing’ the computers, in order to determine whether the caravan needed to have a license to take them to Cuba, explained
Three of the computers seized were the same ones that were taken from last year’s caravan, and were later returned to IFCO/Pastors for Peace.
While the brightly painted trucks and school buses were being searched, the caravan participants protested with chants of “Cuba is no threat to you; let our computers through!” and “Love is our license! Free the computers!” and held banners and signs reading “Cuba is not our enemy” and other slogans.
Next, they gathered around the pickup truck where the seized computers had been placed, and prayed and chanted together, before continuing through the border crossing.
More than 100 North Americans and Europeans are participating in this year’s caravan, traveling via 12 buses and vehicles.
