Rabies Cases Found In Kendall County

BOERNE, Texas -- A sick raccoon that was turned in to the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation facility near Kendalia tested positive for rabies earlier this month, according to the Kendall County Sheriff's Department.

"They had the raccoon and it apparently bit somebody. So they brought it to us after it had died and we had it tested and it turned back with a positive result, " said Lt. Louis Martinez, of the KCSD.

"This organization is 35 years old next June and we've never had a rabid raccoon, " said Lynn Cuny, director of the WRR.

It's too early to tell if the rabies cases this year are cause for concern, but the drought is definitely forcing more and more animals to come into closer contact with humans.

"They're basically seeking the water and some food to eat because of the conditions right now," Martinez said.

"This is very hard on local wildlife. You and I can go get a drink of water somewhere. They can't. So they're moving around more. Their immune systems might be a bit depressed," Cuny said.

Kendall County residents are advised to call the KCSD if they encounter wildlife behaving erratically.

"Leave wild animals alone. It's not that they're dangerous. It's that you don't know what their situation is. you don't know what their health circumstances are, and you shouldn't be messing with them anyway, " Cuny said.
