Sofia to Set Example of Religious Tolerance
Sofia is to become in the course of two days Mecca, Jerusalem and the Vatican at once, when high-ranking clergy from 20 countries will gather together for a joint forum .
The news was reported by the Bulgarian Standard daily.
The forum will be titled "Religion for People" and will discuss ways religion can serve peace and tolerance .
From the Bulgarian side, the participants will include the Patriarch of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Maxim, Chief Mufti, Mustafa Hadzhi, the Chair of the Organization of Bulgarian Jews, Maxim Benevisti, the Head of the Armenian Orthodox Church in Bulgaria, Abkar Hovadinyan, and others.
Meir Lau, the Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv, the Grand Mufti of Istanbul, Professor Mustafa Cagrıcı, a cardinal from the Vatican, clergy from Russia, Romania, Greece, Croatia, Serbia, Cyprus, Albania and Slovenia, along with muftis from the Middle East, will be among the foreign guests.
This first ever such conference in Europe, to be held on August 3rd and 4th, is organized by Bulgarian Final Touch Consulting. The organizers say Bulgaria is the perfect location for such event since it is emblematic for its ethnic and religious peace .
The forum will debate the new challenges before different religions in the conditions of expanding globalization, the economic and spiritual crisis, international terrorism and fundamentalism along with ways to join efforts to solve these problems.

The weekend began with a speech by Archbishop Dr Anastasios of Tirana who is a president of the World Council of Churches. He was welcomed by Archbishop Williams as the Christian leader who had rebuilt the church in Albania after 1990. Archbishop Anastasios noted that “from 1967 to 1990, a atheistic constitution which banned all expressions of religion brought about the complete dissolution of the church (in Albania)”
In 1991 he arrived for the first time in Albania in Tirana as the newly appointed to lead the church. “Together with a group of old and harassed men, we made our way from the airport to the ruined Cathedral of Tirana.
