Audit for nurses

NURSES in the country will soon be audited to ensure they are meeting the competency level required by the Ministry of Health.

This was confirmed to The Fiji Times by the Fiji Nursing Association (FNA)g that the audit process would be done annually.

When contacted yesterday, the Ministry of Health referred all questions to the FNA.

"Every nurse is entitled to a competency level where they are required to provide their services at a nursing standard," FNA general secretary Kuini Lutua said. "And the nursing standards ensures that nurses work efficiently and competently.

"The audit is done annually and its objective to evaluate nurses' work procedures at their respective centres.

"We have not decided a date for the audit but we will surely undertake it since it is an annual event for the ministry," she said.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma earlier said the audit was also aimed to upgrade the skills of nurses.

"The audit process will allow us to look for ways to better the services and facilities in the nursing sector so they don't migrate overseas for greener pastures," Mr Sharma said.

"We have lost a lot of our nurses overseas because they have been offered better deals," he said.

"We need to start planning and doing things that will help ensure that we have the numbers to deliver the service.

"The ministry and Government are committed to ensuring that our nurses are looked after," he added.
